The Mobile Ruin, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto

The Mobile Ruin focuses on the mobility of the Berlin Wall post-1989 in its various forms, from pocket-sized souvenirs to large, two-ton slabs. The exhibition suggests many missing histories as the Wall loses its context through both the passage of time and its incessant movement.

Here the horizontal axis represents site and the vertical represents changes over time.

For example the stack of five images here documents the Wall´s movement at 520 Madison Ave., New York, where it was first placed outdoors in the early 1990s, moved to New Jersey for restoration in 2015 and re-installed indoors at 520 Madison six months later.

The Mobile Ruin focuses on the mobility of the Berlin Wall post-1989 in its various forms, from pocket-sized souvenirs to large, two-ton slabs. The exhibition suggests many missing histories as the Wall loses its context through both the passage of time and its incessant movement. The two images in the foreground are of the moving of newly-painted Wall pieces in Nov. 2014 in Berlin during the 25th anniversary celebrations.

Installation view of our 46´ three-channel video, The Labour of Commemoration, at Prefix ICA, Toronto. The video focuses on the construction (Nov. 1-8, 2014), commemorative day (Nov. 9, 2014) and take down (Nov. 10-14, 2014) of the 25th anniversary events related to the fall of the Berlin Wall in Berlin in November 2014. The viewer is able to observe the past, present and future of the commemorative moment simultaneously.

Artist´s bookwork (in collaboration with Bryan Gee) that offers an incomplete history of the contentious presence of six full-scale, two-ton slabs of the Berlin Wall in Truro, Nova Scotia from 2000-present. The book was presented as part of the installation.

This work, titled "Friendship Park, Tijuana/San Diego", features images of the end of the current fence at the Mexican-American border at Tijuana/San Diego and a short 2´ video interview shot through the fence with a man who recounts the disappearance of a monument to Mexican/American friendship that once stood on the American side of the border. A twin version still exists on the Mexican side.
